One of the suggestions Mayor Purcell made to me when I first broached the subject of an expanded library was to demonstrate both the need of the community for it and the willingness to support it. Our original steering committee decided that the best way to do this was to reach out to the community with a “Bellevue Community Library Survey.” Here are the results of the survey:
* Survey completed by over 900 residents and interested parties
• Of this number, 60% were parents of school-age children, 20% were classified as seniors (over age 55) and the remaining 20% were single adults or married couples without school-age children at home
• 88% of respondents had a Davidson County Library Card, 12% did not
• Respondents report their frequency of usage of the Bellevue Library as:
o 18% visit less than 1 time per month on the average
o 24% visit an average of 1 time per month
o 12% visit twice per month
o 11% visit 3 times per month
o 10% visit 4 times per month
o 5% visit 5 times per month
o 20% visit 6 or more times per month
Respondents were then asked to check their areas of greatest concern or need:
(there were 12 categories & respondents could check off on any concern)
• 84% said that the entire library was too small
• 65% identified the limited hours of the library as a concern
• 59% said that not enough books being available was a concern
• 50% identified the limited parking and/or poor building access as a problem
• 39% said there is not enough selection of CD’s/videos/media available
• 37% said the reading area in the Library is too small
• 33% said there are not enough computers or time available on-line
• 27% said the children’s programs are too limited
• 17% said the Library needed more staff
• 16% said the meeting space in the Library for programs is inadequate
• 14% said there is not enough variety in magazines and periodicals
• 11% said there is inadequate work/shelf space for volunteers
Finally, the Survey posed the question: “If the library and media center were expanded, would you use the facility:
• 40% said “much more”
• 41% said “somewhat more”
• 18% said “about the same”
• 1% said “less”
Your assignment for March is to relay the results of this survey to the Mayor, Vice-Mayor, Council and Library Board. I suggest you do this by targeting those results of the survey that you find meaningful and put them into your own words. Once again, I ask you to be brief and to the point (certainly 1 page or less) and to express your thoughts in your own words. I would suggest you emphasize that this survey was one of the points stressed by Mayor Purcell – show me the need and commitment of the community for a new library!
What other communities would go to the time, trouble and expense of conducting our own survey?
Good luck & good writing!!!!
